Many of the people in Azerbaijan have Turkish or Persian heritage. Much of the country is mountainous, while other parts are low and level. Azerbaijan has many cultural ties to the bordering countries of Iran and Armenia.

Azerbaijan is primarily a farming and herding community, but about half its population lives in cities. The country was a Soviet Republic for much of the 1900s, but declared independence in 1991.

Themes of Azerbaijan include poetry, philosophy, science, dry weather, cactuses, animal herding, cotton and tobacco farming, and petroleum.
