Seneca Proverbs

Before leaving your host, give him a little present—it will serve as a little courtesy, and will not offend.

The more often you ask how much farther you have to go, the longer your quest will feel.

Every fire is the same size when it begins.

He who would do great things should not attempt them all alone.

Native American Wisdom

The Seneca used to live in western New York and eastern Ohio. They were the largest of the five tribes that joined in 1100 to form the Iroquois League. The Seneca used to live on hills near a river, and surrounded themselves with fences to prevent attacks. In the villages, several related families often lived together in long houses.

Today, there are about 9,000 Seneca, and most live on reservations in New York.
